How Image Compression Works
Image compression reduces file size by discarding pixel data that the eye is unlikely to notice. Lossy compression like JPEG achieves the smallest files at the cost of some quality, while lossless methods preserve every pixel but save less space.
Choosing The Right Quality Level
For web publishing, a quality setting between 70–85% usually removes a significant portion of file weight while keeping the image visually sharp. Going below 60% tends to introduce visible blurring and blocking artefacts, especially on edges and fine text.
When To Compress Images
Compress images before uploading to websites, emails, CMS platforms, or social media. Smaller files load faster, use less bandwidth, reduce storage costs, and generally improve Core Web Vitals scores — all of which contribute to better SEO and user experience.
