Why Image Dimensions Matter
Uploading oversized images wastes bandwidth and storage. A photo from a modern smartphone can be 4000 px wide — far larger than any standard web column. Resizing to the actual display size improves load speed and reduces hosting costs.
Choosing The Right Output Size
Use the final display dimensions as a guide. For a blog post hero image, 1200–1600 px wide is usually enough. For thumbnails or avatars, 200–400 px is sufficient. Retina displays benefit from 2× the CSS size, so a 400 px wide slot may warrant a 800 px image.
